The Day After: Gloversville Fire Destroys South Main Street Buildings

Fulton County Area News video via Facebook

Fire official says its the worst fire of his career.

A large fire broke out Tuesday night, destroying buildings at 102 and 110 South Main Street in Gloversville. According to Gloversville Fire Chief Thomas Groff, the fire started around 7 p.m. and was difficult to contain due to smoke, wind, and rain. He told CBS 6 it's the worst blaze he's ever encountered.

We've had some big mills you know but obviously the most challenging, the most fire on different fronts, multiple buildings and a lot of fire. So yeah definitely probably the worst fire I've been to in my career.

Both buildings were a total loss. One of them housed Adirondack Exotics, a local pet and exotic animal business. In a Facebook post Wednesday morning, the owners said they lost everything, including animals and pets. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up with the hopes of rebuilding the shop.

The other building, a long-vacant textile factory, was set for demolition Wednesday morning.

As a precaution, the Fulton County Regional SPCA temporarily evacuated dogs from its shelter on 110 West Fulton Street, though no damage was reported there.

No injuries were reported, but embers from the fire did ignite causing some damage to nearby homes as well as damage to a car dealership next door.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
