Total Lunar Eclipse Over Albany, Here's When to Look Up

Mike Blake, Reuters

It's called the 'Blood Moon'

If you're a night owl—or just a fan of cool celestial events—set a reminder for late Thursday night into early Friday morning. The Capital Region is in for a spectacular show as a total lunar eclipse graces our skies.

The main event begins around 2:15 a.m. Friday, when the Earth's shadow starts creeping across the Moon. By 3:30 a.m., the eclipse will reach totality, bathing the Moon in a reddish-orange glow—hence the nickname, the 'Blood Moon.' The show wraps up just before dawn, so if you’re up late (or really early), it’s worth a look.

No telescope? No problem. Just step outside, face west, and enjoy the view. Clear skies permitting, this will be the last total lunar eclipse visible from our area until 2029—so don’t miss it!
